Learning

A broad and balanced curriculum is the cornerstone of a Newland House education and gives every child the opportunity to explore their academic, sporting and creative passions.

OUR BROAD CURRICULUM

We are committed to supporting every pupil’s unique learning journey and your child will be encouraged to be academic ambitious, intellectually curious, motivated to explore, question and discover the world around them.

Pupils in the Prep School learn from passionate and knowledgeable subject specialists in Maths, English, French, Science, History, Geography, Religious Studies, Latin, Computing, Music, Art, Drama, Design Technology, Games and Swimming.

Our experienced Learning Enrichment team is on hand to empower children with the additional support and skills needed to fully access the curriculum, as well as offering further extension and challenge for our more able pupils. There also is dedicated support available for children joining us with English as an additional language (EAL).

Small Class sizes

Class sizes are smaller than in most primary schools and in the case of our Year 7 and 8 classes, significantly smaller than in secondary schools and independent senior schools.

In small class sizes, our teachers know every child extremely well and can give your child the attention they need to succeed. This individualised approach means that no one is left behind, children to feel comfortable speaking up, asking questions and seeking help when they need it.

EXAMS AND ASSESSMENTS

We believe in the power of carefully pitched ongoing assessment to guide each child’s learning journey. Assessment through targeted questioning and assignments is woven into our teaching, allowing us to monitor progress, provide support when needed, and offer tailored challenges.

We also use standardised assessments for comparing against national standards and school exams to ensure taught material has been well understood. For older students, these exams also help refine techniques and timing, essential for success in senior school entry assessments.

Preparation for Senior School at 11+ or 13+

We focus on carefully preparing children for their senior school assessments in Year 6, developing exam techniques, time management, and revision skills without compromising on the breath of curriculum.

This comprehensive approach ensures that our pupils have the best possible advantages for success in their 11+ or 13+ senior school applications.

Parents as Partners on the learning journey

We place enormous value on the relationship that we build with your family and the School.  Alongside regular parents evenings, book looks and formal school reports, we encourage open dialogue with parents to ensure that, together, we are guiding your child.
