Our History

Founded in 1897, we are proud of our long history and traditions.

OUR HISTORY

Newland House School was founded in Oak Lane, Twickenham, in a building which took its name from its former owner, Francis Henry Newland Glossop, J.P. (brother of the then Vicar of Twickenham, the Revd. George Glossop).

Per Ardua ad Gloriam

Through hard work to glory

The School moved to a larger site in Strawberry Hill Road, Twickenham, in about 1930 and then to its present site in Waldegrave Park between 1944 and 1945 when, for a time, it became known as ‘Twickenham Grammar School’.

The school was privately owned until 1971 when the Newland House School Trust was formed. We are now a charitable Educational Trust with a Board of Governors.

OUR CREST

There is a story behind each of the elements that make up our school crest. Hover over the crosses to find out more.

The shield comes from the Waldegrave Coat of Arms. Lady Frances Waldegrave (b.1821) is famous for saving Strawberry Hill House from ruin. She inherited it through her marriage to John Waldegrave, the grandson and successor to Horace Walpole’s great niece, Elizabeth Waldegrave. Elements from the Coat of Arms of the Borough of Twickenham are incorporated.
