Music

Our vibrant Music department is housed in a recently updated Music block, complete with modern practice spaces and professional-level equipment.

Music at Newland House

Learning music with a specialist teacher, all our pupils are encouraged to experience the joy of performing and creating music.

Outside of timetabled lessons, there are many opportunities for children to play a musical instrument or join an ensemble or choir. Approximately 70% of our pupils take advantage of the wealth of experience that our visiting peripatetic music teacher offer through one-to-one lessons from Year 1 upwards. Lessons are offered across a broad spectrum of orchestral instruments, singing, drums and guitar. Pupils can enter for graded music examinations which are generally held in the Spring term.

Young musicians can join a variety of choirs and ensembles, some of which are open to all abilities and others by invitation to pupils with particular musical talent and aspiration.

Our choirs include: Year 1 and 2, Year 3 and 4, Newland House Choir, Senior Boys’ Choir and a Chamber Choir. Recent annual choir trips have toured Belgium, Cornwall and other parts of the UK.

Ensembles include: Orchestra, Guitar, Recorder, Ukulele, Pop-Rock Bands, Strings, Wind, African Drums, plus songwriting and theory groups.

There are many performance opportunities for all pupils, from informal concerts which are great fun and well attended to larger events such as the Spring Concert held at the Hammond Theatre, Hampton School and a Choral Day at Wellington College.

Additional support is offered to pupils preparing for Music Scholarships and over the years many of our pupils have been successful in gaining Scholarships to senior schools.
